MESH Wifi for West Philly?
West Philly ought to have the necessary density of progressive residents and organizations needed to sustain a community-based wifi service for the neighborhood.
I've initiated a map of potential participants and equipment to be used. I am swayed by the simple setup and pricing model for both hardware and management software provided by the San Francisco-based Meraki.
Do you know an individual, group-house, business or organization that might like to participate by hosting the simple hardware in their home or on their property (church spire, rooftop, lamp-post, etc.)? The benefits are access to free community wireless internet, helping to establish a local network that is (or could easily become) semi-independent of big operators and that could potentially provide for a neighborhood-wide 'hot zone' for VOIP telephone service for wifi-enabled phones, such as the Nokia e61.
